Filed under: Olympics, Track and FieldJamaican sprinter Asafa Powell broke his own world record in the 100 meters today, running a blistering 9.74 seconds at the Rieti Grand Prix in Italy. Powell's time did not come in the final; he ran the world record time in one of the two heats to reach the 100 final. Powell has run 9.77 -- the time that had been the world record -- on three different occasions. Three-hundredths of a second may not sound like a lot, but in the 100 meters, he just obliterated the record.Powell finished a disappointing third in the 100 last month at the world track and field championships in Osaka, Japan, losing the title of World's Fastest Man to Tyson Gay. But today's performance puts Powell back on the top of the track and field world, and it reminds us that we could have an outstanding 100 meters ahead of us in Beijing next year.
