Some believe that when we take communion we are receiving the actual body and blood of Christ. Some believe that the crucified and risen Christ is “really present” in “the sacrament,” and that with the bread and wine (we use grape juice) are receiving Christ's body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. Sacramentalism is defined as: 1. a belief or emphasis on the importance and efficacy of the sacraments for achieving salvation and conferring grace. 2. emphasis on the importance of sacramental objects and ritual actions. (dictionary.com) Sacramentalism is the belief that a physical act can bestow a spiritual benefit. Is this biblical? Scripture tells us that the just shall live by faith. (Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, Hebrews 10:38) “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 Jesus used metaphors when he taught.
