The first sign that the McCain campaign had a serious pulse was the 'celeb ad.' That ad, together with its follow-ons and the messiah-themed web pieces, generated a huge amount of interest on cable and on the internet and drove the narrative of the campaign. The Palin pick has worked similarly, to maximize interest and exposure. She's been the viral VP selection. The extreme secrecy around McCain's pick created a frenzy of interest two Fridays ago. Her profile as a woman and mother of five got her on the cover of super-market magazines that don't usually feature Republican politicians. The rabid attacks on her right off the bat only stoked conservative enthusiasm for her, while the expectation that--as a novice on the national scene--she might not be able to perform prompted additional millions to tune in for the drama of her convention address.
