NYE: Strawberry rediscovers baseball after cancer battle |

TEN YEARS AGO, Darryl Strawberry was reviving his baseball career with the New York Yankees. After several years of struggles, both on and off the field, Strawberry had rediscovered some of his power.He connected for 24 home runs and helped the 1998 Yankees to 125 victories, including the postseason, and the World Series title. Unfortunately, right before the postseason began, Strawberry was diagnosed with colon cancer.Strawberry underwent surgery and a series of chemotherapy treatments. It was deemed a success.These days, Strawberry does occasional commentary for Sports Net New York, which televises the majority of the Mets games, and oversees his Darryl Strawberry Foundation for autistic children. The cancer appears to be gone.“I’m a survivor,” Strawberry said. But the man many once thought would have one of the greatest careers of all time, has survived more than cancer.
