When Iowa's legislators passed a law saying marriage is valid between only a male and a female, they set themselves on a collision course with the state and federal constitutions. Through equal-protection and due-process provisions, both constitutions set forth that all laws must be applied to every person in the same way. Rox Laird will comment on Judge Robert B. Hanson's 63-page ruling. Bottom line: He got it right. The Legislature's best option would be to approve the alternative course of recognizing civil unions for all couples. Marriages are religious rituals that properly should be governed by religious institutions.
